Berkeley police have stepped up patrols around a middle school after a teacher there received anonymous threats that she be fired after she protested against white supremacists - and was seen screaming and punching a neo-Nazi - at rally in Sacramento over the weekend.
If the teacher isn’t fired, the threats indicated, students might be harmed.
Felarca deserves to be awarded a medal, not fired. The school administration should stand in solidarity with their brave faculty member and refuse to be intimidated by the cowardly threats of those whom she has stood up against as is her duty as an American. Perhaps even more importantly, her students should stand in solidarity with their teacher, and they should make clear to the school administration that they would not want slavish safety for themselves purchased from the far-right by sacrificing such an honourable teacher. The students deserve safety, but the only dignified safety available to them is that which Felarca is fighting for on their behalf (as are we): the safety of a society where racist goons like Matthew Heimbach have permanently ceased to exist. If the students want such safety, they should join Felarca (and us) in this fight.
In an interview Wednesday, the target of the threat - Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School teacher Yvette Felarca - said she blames Donald Trump for the “vile and racist” atmosphere burgeoning in the United States. And she defended any “militant” action taken to stop it, despite concerns from the American Civil Liberties Union that all people - even Trump and white supremacists - are allowed the right to speak their minds.
The ACLU does not have a clue about what free speech means. More on this below.
Felarca was one of the 10 people injured at the rally on Sunday outside the Capitol building held by the Traditionalist Worker Party. Felarca helped organize a protest against the white supremacist group, and was attacked in the process. She suffered a bloody wound on her head, but said on Wednesday that she was OK.
We thank Felarca for her efforts, and wish her a speedy recovery from her injuries. We also recommend that every member of her group owns and trains regularly with firearms, and in paramilitary discipline. This will make her group more effective in combat. Perhaps her head wound could have been avoided if her group had more familiarity with sniper rifles.
When she’s not teaching, Felarca, who works in the city that gave birth to the free speech movement, is a member of the activist group, “By Any Means Necessary,” which states on its website that fascists should not be allowed free speech.
But everyone has a right to speak their minds, according to the ACLU, which has a long history of protecting groups its members despite philisophically.
“While the ACLU denounces the message of racism and white supremacy at the rally, the state and federal constitutions protect everyone’s right to free speech, whether we agree with their opinions or not,” senior San Francisco staff attorney Linda Lye said Wednesday in an email. “But the Constitution does not protect violent acts, and that’s true regardless of who commits them and what their views are.”
Unfortunately, it appears that BAMN’s understanding of free speech is no better than the ACLU’s. I would like to take this opportunity to cover the topic.
We support free speech. Free speech means that what you wish to say - irrespective of its content - need never pass through state filters prior to reaching the public. Free speech does not mean that the state is obliged to let you cower behind its police force if you offend someone in public with your words. This is the True Left approach to free speech, distinct from the confusion that speakers are somehow automatically entitled to round-the-clock personal protection at the state’s expense while the only acceptable reaction of the offended is to ”grow a thicker skin”.
As a side note, BAMN’s understanding of fascism is also poor, and we hope it can rectify this soon if it wishes to be rhetorically competitive in the post-PC era. Here is one aspect of authentic fascism:

a group called Pioneer Little Europe USA posted a blog post about Felarca that describes her as a “left-wing terrorist cult leader,” and calls for her arrest and termination. Jared Wyand, who shot video of her and lists himself as an “AmericaFirst Crusader,” wrote a sympathetic tweet about the man getting punched by Felarca, describing her and her allies as the antagonists and fascists.
Wyand is correct in calling Felarca a fascist: Felarca was basically volunteering as a lictor on behalf of America. This is respectable and admirable behaviour. We wish more Americans could follow her example. We authentic National Socialists (does Felarca know the difference between us and neo-Nazis?) have our own equivalent:

What Wyand is incorrect about is calling himself “AmericaFirst”; he sides with PLE, which makes it clear from its very name and its objective of capturing American territory and transforming it into exclusively ”white” settlements (c.f. Israeli settlements in Palestine praised by Trump) that his real allegiance is to ”whiteness”, not to America.
